Entrepreneurial Career
In 1990, Grady co-founded a defense contracting company that became a trusted partner for both government and enterprise organizations. Five years later, he launched a digital signature company that introduced secure authentication solutions across federal systems.
As an officer in both companies for more than sixteen years, he led major projects delivering mission-critical financial systems and cybersecurity frameworks.
Digital Signature Innovation
One of his defining achievements was creating the first Department of Defense–approved digital signature solution, later adopted by several U.S. agencies. His financial management system for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stood out as the only one to pass the CFO Act audit for fifteen consecutive years without exception.
Key contributions included:
- Early adoption of smart card technology in the U.S.
- ESIG, the prototype digital signature system for USACE (1992)
- GAO-approved legally binding electronic signatures (1993)
- DBsign®, a database signing tool using RSA encryption
These efforts played an essential role in shaping national standards for secure electronic transactions, developed in partnership with GAO, NIST, OMB, the State Department, and the Census Bureau.
Career Milestones
Career highlights include:
- Input to the DoD Public Key Infrastructure Roadmap (2000)
- First JITC certification of a digital signature solution (2001)
- DoD-wide deployment of signature software (2003)
- NIAP Common Criteria Validation (2005 and 2011)
- Digital signature solutions for mobile devices (2016)
